As those of us who have been part of 2022’s transformational journey would attest, the tiny book of just 700 verses that is the Bhagavad Gita is in fact too vast to even comprehend – let alone master in just one year!
No wonder it is considered to be one of the three pillars of the entire Indian philosophy (the other two being the Upanishads and the Brahma Sutras).
However, the word philosophy doesn’t quite cut it when it comes to the Gita: far from being a subject matter for intellectual “head-trips”, it gives us invaluable practical insights into every aspect of life, so that we can find balance and harmony, meaning, motivation, fulfilment, and a way out of personal traumas and difficulties, no matter how hard or terrible they may be.
It is not an easy read, though, and it’s best to take it in small doses and assimilate it gradually, day by day, ideally mixed with other yogic practices that aid the mental “digestion”.
So, for the entire year of 2023, we will get up in the early morning hours for 30-or-so minutes of:
- Gita reading
We will put special emphasis on practices that stimulate and awaken the ajna chakra (aka the third eye, or eye of intuition), both in mantra and pranayama. The mantra most closely associated with ajna chakra (along with Om) is the Gayatri mantra, and we will explore its many dimensions, forms, and relationship with pranayama over the course of the year.
Along with the Gayatri(s), those who feel so inclined can also join in for the chanting of the Gita verses, which are mantras in their own right and which subtly help the teachings percolate into the deeper recesses of the mind.
We will also delve into the practice of Ajapa Japa, where breath and mantra are guided along the frontal or spinal psychic passage, and see how just a few minutes of practice every morning go a long way to transform the way in which the mind works for the rest of the day. It also helps relax the mind after the Gita reading, aiding the assimilation of the teachings and their processing in the deeper layers of the mind.
With all these elements evolved very slowly and gradually over the course of the year, you will create a strong positive habit, which is the only way to achieve real, tangible, life-changing transformation.

While it is possible to join it at any stage, we have moved on from the basics quite a bit by now. For this reason, if you’d like to join at this stage, you’ll need to be familiar with the following:
- Gayatri mantra
- Ajapa Japa meditation
- Nadi Shodhana pranayama

A year of transformation? Yes, without a doubt. It has been the most transformational year for me since mantra diksha. Adjectives to describe the course: inspiring, helpful, comforting, regulating. I have “studied” the Gita before but not like this. The depth of knowledge that Mahesh shares with us is incredible. Again and again, I find myself wishing I’d brought pen and paper to note the names of saints and scriptures he casually drops in. Perhaps I’ll get that together next year. Really pleased I decided to join the morning chanting course. It has helped so much in giving my morning practice consistency and structure.
Receiving the infinite wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, broken down into a daily digestible portions as presented by Mahesh, has been an invaluable way to start each day.
Each session is recorded and uploaded should a session be missed or should one need to review. The regular seminars where we have the opportunity to recap over the recent chapters are also so helpful in the effort to truly integrate these lessons.
